Championship game of the Legends Classic tipping off at 9:30 PM Eastern on ESPN2.
ASU:
They are led by bag of Dook, Bobby Hurley. Hurley has been a terrible offensive coach for ASU. This is Hurley's eighth year as the Sun Devils coach. They have made the tournament twice and only have a play-in game win.
As I mentioned before, ASU is offensively challenged. Through four games, they are ranked 153rd in offensive efficiency. They are shooting 44% on twos (277th) and 29.4% on threes (238th) for a 44% eFG% (279th). They also turn the ball over on 21 percent of their possessions (249th). These are putrid numbers for a team that has only played one game against a top-200 opponent. They have a FT% of 66.7% (230th), but they like to play fast (59th in avg possession length) so I guess that's a positive stat.
There's really nothing to get excited about for this group offensively, especially considering Hurley's last team was even worse. It's not like he has solutions.
Their defense is a different story. They have terrific positional length and check in at 35th in adjusted defensive efficiency. Opponents are shooting 45% on twos (93rd) and 25.6% on threes (60th) for a 42.6% eFG% (60th). They force turnovers on 21.4% of possessions (101st).
Everyone will be seeing a familiar face in Frankie Collins tonight. He has stepped into an alpha role with ASU where he dominates the ball to mixed results. He's shooting 46% on twos, 31% on threes, and has a 35.5% assist rate. Those numbers come with an elevated 25.7% turnover rate. His shot looks improved over last year, but he's still an inefficient option leading an inefficient offense. Stop his dribble penetration and force him to shoot jump shots. He's just 5-19 on jump shots off the dribble this year.
This is the first real test for the offense. They've looked fantastic against three terrible defensive teams so far this season, but ASU is going to provide a tough test for Michigan's ball screen offense and for young players like Kobe and Jett. Hunter is the advantage in this matchup. Shocking, right? ASU doesn't have an option that should be able to stop him. Early-game post touches with a few early baskets will draw the inevitable double teams and open up the floor. Those touches will likely lead to fouls on ASU's foul prone frontline as well.
