Mayhew publicly said they had conversation upon conversation about keeping him in Detroit. If he loves this city, and you believe those tears that he had post-Dallas, then something should get done.

But otherwise, expect him to go somewhere that he can be a media darling (New York, California).

those tears last for about 5 minutes....then they turned into $$$$$$$$$$$$$

mayhew should have offered him his true value....

20 per is not his true value. It will be what he gets paid possibly though. Will Mayhew match it. He can, but will he want to overpay. We shall see. Letting him walk is a Patriots/Packers type thing to do

also Suh could just be sick of living in Detroit and knew someone else would give him 20 million per.

when all 32 teams want your services....your true value is the contract you agree to. If mayhew offered him 15 mil that's a BS offer and knew it would be declined. Hell be over 6 years 110 mil. More than likely a 15 mil offer just pissed suh off.

We may never know what he offered. Could have been 18 per. That's pretty fair. Typically you don't offer the overpay amount when you still have a year left on the deal. You try for the correct value.

Plus Suh is being greedy. We are talking 100 million or 120 million after he made 65 million he didn't deserve on a rookie deal (timing of drafted in 2010). Suh really needs that extra 20 million (rolls eyes).

He's got good coaches and an 11-5 team, a near top defense. Everything he could want in Detroit. 100 million he should accept that offer.

But if he doesn't want to live in Detroit, well I could see wanting to move from Detroit. Just another issue Mayhew has to deal with (a less than desirable team location).

It's not being greedy for taking money someone is fighting to give you. He did earn his rookie money by training, performing and becoming a top 2 draft pick. He was given a fair deal at the time. He came out when that contract was the norm. Hes been a better value than a lot of draft picks.

I think it is. When you make so much money already, how much different is say 17 million vs 19 million? Does it make that big of a deal to someone who is already rich beyond their wildest imagination? Not to mention sponsorships, commercial gigs, etc...

If he wants to play here, and he loves the city and fans that much, he should be willing to play for a very reasonable offer. Calvin and Stafford already said they were willing to restructure their deals to keep everything in tact.

If he doesn't, he's just another business man looking to get the most coin. And if so, cya later.

How dare someone try to inject Capitalism into our otherwise perfect American society??

Capitalism is one thing. Straight up greed is another. Nobody needs 65 and 120 instead of getting 65 and 100. That last 20 million is pure greed.

its not just suh that decides. Theres teams out there like the jags that after the cap increase are like only 60% at the cap amount. Those teams HAVE TO overpay some people the next couple years. They can easily front load a contract and pay suh 25 mil next year. I doubt suhs representatives say no to something like that.

So no the difference between 17 and 19 mil isn't a big deal to a guy like suh. But the difference between 17 and 25 mil is a big deal to everyone.

To add some context to that. Andre Johnsons next contract will probably be 8 mil a year. So they will overpay suh an entire Andre Johnson contract.

Once you get to a certain point. 165 million, anything else doesn't matter. Suh should have taken the offers he got this past year.

165, 185, 190, whatever, you are filthy rich every way.

Let him go to the Jags. Mayhew can add more talent with 17 million (or more room) and a draft.

And yes the Jags could offer like 30 million SB and 30 million base salary year 1. And still have over 30 million left in space.

But that sets such a terrible precedent for future contracts.

gotta remember he doesn't actually see all of that money. taxes, agent's cut, throw in numerous others who are taking from his $65M, my bet is he was lucky to see $20M after all was said and done. a $100M vs $120M contract is actually going to boil down to roughly him actually seeing $30M-$35M.

it's like the MegaMillions and PowerBall winners. after you take the full amount option and then Uncle Sam takes his cut, you are actually looking at only about 35-40% (depending on state tax) of the advertised prize. just saying, don't let the advertised salary fool you into believing he actually sees that amount. this is why he networked and became friends with Warren, to try and one day actually see that advertised amount.

20 million is enough still. Filthy rich.

and before people say it is more than enough to live on, remember he has already spent a good amount of what he earned and he is still a young guy. inflation and poor spending habits catch up to these guys eventually which is part of the reason so many former pro athletes are now broke, even ones who once earned a top salary for their day.

Investing. he is friends with Warren Buffett. I'm sure Suh is filthy rich not needing an extra 20 million.

Suh should take the most money offered. I don't know if that makes sense for the Lions, but it always makes sense for Suh. The game ends very early in life for all players. Suh has designs on being filthy rich, and his kids/grandkids/greatgrandkids being filthy rich the rest of their lives. Suh is a very smart guy, no matter what some may think of him as a person. And 2 million dollars per year is still a huge difference.

Based on being a smart person, I would say Jacksonville is the favorite to land Suh. 1) Jacksonville has gobs of cash and the NEED to spend, and would likely offer the largest total contract. 2) Suh immediately becomes the biggest star on the team and all talk about the team would start with him. 3) Florida has no income tax, and Suh would ultimately keep more of his massive contract than signing anywhere else.

I would like to think winning is important to Suh, but he's also spent his entire career so far with one of the sorriest franchises in sports. We've had two good years since he's been here, but both times were nowhere near super-bowl contention. On one hand, he may be smart enough to realize that only a few teams really have a shot each year and few if any of them can afford him. On the other, maybe he does want to win badly, at which point Detroit is still not the best destination.

I heard, can't remember where, that around 500 million is the area where lifestyle doesn't change much with next dollar. So Suh has a ways to go.

We were Super bowl caliber this year. Refs cost us a great chance.

Detroit is on par with Seattle, Green Bay, Patriots and Indy for Super Bowl contention.
