Harbaugh NFL Rumors

"Those who stay will be champions" is a phrase primarily directed at the players. As I see it and and I recall it was established. Players were fleeing from the program in 1969, and Bo drew a line for them to cross and consider.

So now that they're reporting that this investigation could potentially come with a multi-game suspension for Jim, one could come to the conclusion that he was being cagey because he might be suspended and unable to coach the team. I don't think that is the case but it is a possibility I suppose.

The YAHOO story, which was probably just picked up from somewhere else, because no one generates their own material anymore, said a "source" revealed these allegations. Journalism 101: always corroborate a story with at least two sources.

EDIT: The headline changes from "Source" to "Sources" Link

The NCAA is a punchline.

"The Level I allegation is that Harbaugh misled NCAA investigators when confronted with questions about the Level II allegations. A Level I violation could lead to significant recruiting restrictions or even a suspension for a number of games."

So far, nothing but speculation.

The Freep reports this:
The Free Press has confirmed that Michigan is expected to receive an official notice of allegations from the NCAA soon, charging the program with four Level II violations ? those deemed ?more than a minimal but less than a substantial or extensive recruiting, competitive or other advantage? according to a description adopted in 2019 ? and Harbaugh himself with a Level I violation ? a ?severe breach of conduct? that ?seriously undermine or threaten the integrity of college sports,? per the guidelines.
LOL, what integrity? This is from a group of adults that make money by pushing 18-22 kids around...

No press releases about this yet on the NCAA site, and they do post about recruiting violations elsewhere (recently they've posted allegations about CSUN and Memphis).

People speculating on twitter that the misconduct involved minor stuff... but they have some details: either Harbaugh or one of his assistants bought lunch for recruits on an unplanned visit to Ann Arbor sometime in 2020, and they supposedly invited recruits to workout on zoom chat during the pandemic season, which is or was not allowed.

Whether he lied to the NCAA or not about that stuff... seems absurd, and way out of character. We'll see, I guess. Fucking ridiculous given there's not a peep about things like this on the NCAA site. You can embezzle $500,000 from a charity to give to the parents of a recruit, but you can't buy a kid lunch at The Brown Jug... I guess the NCAA is really strict about stuff though.

According to Chris Balas. The issue is when the ncaa asked Jim about it he said he didn?t remember buying the lunch. The ncaa iImmediately goes to he is not Cooperating with the investigation and showed him the receipt. We have universities just handing out money without any accountability but Jim gets nailed for buying kids lunch and saying he didn?t remember doing it.

Michigan has gotten too good and looks to be for years to come. This constitutes a disadvantage for Ohio State and so must be corrected. More NCAA bullshit.

Here?s the answer ?Okay, you guys know I coached in the NFL, right? I ain?t Jimmy Johnson, Barry Switzer or Pete Carrol, but I did get to a Super Bowl and also two CFPs. There ain?t that many of us that did. Anyways, I?ve been contemplating my future, talking to various NFL teams, and what with that and NIL and whatnot, who can really remember what the rules for what are what?

Maybe I paid for lunch, or I didn?t. I?m paid 7 million bucks a year! Yeah, it?s chump change compared to that Tesla asshole or that Amazon asshole but it?s still pretty good money. I?m supposed to remember if I paid for lunch?

Ban me from college football if you want to - I was probably going back to the NFL anyway. It worked out for Pete Carroll after the Reggie Bush shit and Barry Switzer after his shit at Oklahoma - I was a little kid when that happened but I kinda remember.?

This type of stuff is why everyone hates the NCAA. No one should have spent one second caring about these "violations". Instead the NCAA is going to try and puff their chest in some absurd attempt to say "we still have authoritah!".

A complete waste of everyone's time.

Don't know anything about Athlon, but this piece is saying Carolina has moved on from him. From the article...

"The Panthers spoke with Jim Harbaugh recently but only after a good deal of persistence on Harbaugh?s side. Carolina plans to focus its efforts elsewhere," said Jonathan Jones...

It's entirely possible the Panthers never wanted to pursue Jim Harbaugh. As noted by Jones, Harbaugh's side initiated the contact.

They?ve been publishing a college football preseason preview for as long as I?ve been following college football, over 50 years.

Them and Street and Smith.

That?s about what I know.

oh yeah, I remember getting those preview magazines in college and up until most of that stuff was available online - got them for basketball too.

Corum announces he is coming back. Would he return if he thougth JH was going to the NFL? Are there lines to read between here?

I can fathom the attraction to the Panthers on the part of JH. The owner is a buh-billionaire and wants to buy a SB title and recreate the Steelers in NC. So far, he's done squat, except fire a coach.

Latest update is that the contract negotiations between Jim and Michigan are currently held up due to the buyout number that Michigan wants. As much as I think Jim deserves to be paid like the top 5 coach he is, he only has himself to blame for Michigan's insistence on a high buyout. And honestly the buyouts typically drop year after year and if you're talking about what amounts to $5MM when they're saying NFL teams are getting ready to pay in excess of $20MM/year it's not like they are going to pass up on their guy if it's going to cost them an extra $4-5MM. Hell, the Broncos are considering giving up that kind of money AND draft picks (far more valuable than $5MM) for Sean Payton.

Hopefully they can settle it this week. Perfect world Jim gets his $10MM/year, an increase in assistant salary pool and a commitment to NIL while Michigan gets something that formally signals to recruits that Jim isn't leaving.

Wasn't the story a couple of years ago about what a great guy Jim Harbaugh is? How it's not about money for him, he wasn't trying to save his job, it was that he'd made enough money and didn't need to bleed the university so he took massive pay cut to stay with the team and also to make sure his assistant coaches got paid? What is this, the second or third time he's openly flirted w/ the NFL to leverage a better deal from uofm? If he stays and gets a massive raise, does that mean he's not different from every other coach trying to maximize their value extraction?

A couple years ago a myopic, ungrateful and misguided Michigan fan base, well represented on this board, was calling for Harbaugh to be fired.

Two years, two conferences championships later and two CFP appearances later, Harbaugh seems to be wanting Lincoln Riley money; Riley does have one more CFP loss than Jim.

Here in Los Angeles, Riley has been being greeted like a conquering hero. I guess USC fans miss gettin? into the natty conversation, so what if it took a little cheatin? to get there?

Imagine the kind of dough Riley could be holding any college team over a barrel for if he had ever led a team to a Super Bowl appearance? Break out the Brinks truck.

Harbaugh is different than almost every other coach. He?s coached a team to the Super Bowl and two CFPs. Not too many have done that.

If Harbaugh does choose to stay at Michigan, the myopic, ungrateful and misguided Michigan fan base should be considering themselves lucky.

Not that they will.

He did take a pay cut and he did return a bonus in excess of $250k to ensure that other people in the AD didn't have to take a pay cut. Have you ever sacrificed 5% of your salary to give to your co-workers? Was it Mel Tucker that told the AD that offered to make him the highest paid college coach "No thanks, save that money for my assistants". No, that was Jim Harbaugh when he was hired.

There's plenty of examples to show that money isn't the driving force behind what Jim does. The consensus seems to be that it's not about the money so much as it's that the money means he's appreciated.
