RAPID FIRE.
Totally Tigers

The off-season is a time when hires are made and potential rosters start to take shape. It?s a season of hope and often what happens behind the scenes is just as important as the changes we?ll be seeing on the field.

Next week, pitchers and catchers report as teams head into spring training. Life is fresh, especially welcome given the times we live in currently. So this is the perfect time for Holly and Kurt to share their wish lists for the 2021 season.

What will make them happy to experience? What new things do they want to see?
We?re assuming that the pieces have already been put into place and that no more big changes will be made. Therefore, we?re not writing about a new owner or GM. A new training staff or broadcasters. This blog is all about what is in place now and not a wish list of the people we want to see leave or come in.

Holly and Kurt have just 2 sentences each to state their opinions. As always, their answers aren?t shared until publication. Let?s see what they have to say?

Holly:
1. The Manager
2. Improved Hitting
3. Starting pitching
4. Proper Prospects
5. New Baseballs

Kurt:
1. Pitching
2. Hitting
3. Development of talent
4. A new mindset
5. Comebacks

I'm disappointed by the players they signed. It's like they're waiting for Miggy's contract to run it's course before they spend any money. Which is just dumb. We have to wait 5 years and just keep signing 1 year guys over and over.

SO YOU WANT TO BE THE GM?
Totally Tigers

Once again, readers get a chance to make their own decisions about the Tigers. So You Want to Be the GM? offers you that opportunity.
The segment tests our readers in determining how they would handle decisions as the General Manager. So here is your next assignment. Let?s get to it!
(Comments may be extended for this segment, but please do not exceed 8 sentences in your response).

The Tigers have signed 26-year-old Renato Nunez to a minor league contract. In five MLB seasons, he has 140 games as a designated hitter, 81 as a third baseman, 52 as a first baseman and eight as a left fielder. He has excellent power numbers, having posted 31 home runs over 152 games played in 2019 and 12 home runs over 52 games in 2020.

The bad news is that he strikes out a lot and takes very few walks. He struck out 64 times last season and only drew 17 walks in his 216 plate appearances. But his on-base percentage was still .311 in 2019 and .324 in 2020.
So, what do you think about this signing? Do the Tigers have something here or not? Please participate in the survey and tell us where you stand.

What do you think about the signing of Renato Nunez?
1. Could be a steal
2. Encouraging
3. Doesn't move the needle
4. Waste of a roster spot

It certainly isn't very exciting, but I'm not sure what kind of free agents you want them to sign. To get anyone decent, they are going to have to significantly over pay. Plus, they are going to suck regardless, why waste the money?

I'm fine with the plan. Suck & build the farm system. This year is a trial run for the young pitchers. If they show promise I think they will start to dip their toes into the free agent water next off season. Nothing huge, but some solid longer term guys. 2023 & 2024 they might be ready to compete for the division and maybe make a splash in free agency.

They don't have to significantly over pay for some. I'm not talking about 5 year 110m guys. The thing about suck and build the farm is the farm that gets brought up are on bad teams. Besides the frustration - before you know it they're be free agents. Plus these farm guys haven't played in some time. And the 1st baseman hasn't played at all. I wish Mr. I was still here. Maybe he overspent at times but he put a winning team together.

They're at 72m now. And one is a 30m guy. I guess we're the new Pirates.

IMO, Mr I is the reason they are in this mess. He did spend, but he ruined the farm system trying for a title, and he didn't really spend wisely. The Tigers would most likely be just as bad as they are now with no farm system no hope at all for the future.

I blame the GM at the time more than MR I. You'll notice Dumbrowski screwed up the Red Sox farm system as well.

In the end don't trade just go after free agents.

Don't be fooled, all of those big money decisions were Mr I's. He was mortgaging he future for a ring. I don't blame him...he knew his days were numbered.
