Tigers 2021-2022 Free Agents Trades Rule 5 Arbitration Moves

Tigers Notes: Story, Cueto.
MLBTR

The Tigers were known to be looking at all of the ?big six? free agent shortstops, and signed Javier Baez to a six-year, $140MM deal prior to the lockout. There wasn?t much known about the Tigers? negotiations with Story, though Evan Petzold of The Detroit Free Press reports that ?Story wasn?t interested in the Tigers? proposed contract structure.?
This is an interesting wrinkle considering that Story also got six years and $140MM from the Red Sox, though Baez?s salary is a bit backloaded and he can opt out of the deal following the 2023 season.
Story?s deal also has an opt-out decision but not until after the 2025 season, plus the Sox can overwrite Story?s opt-out by exercising a club option for a seventh year.

In other Tigers news, GM Al Avila told reporters that the club is ?done? their major offseason shopping after signing Michael Pineda for the back of the rotation. Detroit had one of the more aggressive and active winters of any club, and Avila and his front office also explored many other options besides the players they did acquire via trades and free agent deals.
In regards to the Pineda contract, for instance, the Tigers looked at several other available veterans who ended up signing elsewhere, and Petzold adds that Detroit also considered Johnny Cueto.
Last month, MLBTR?s Steve Adams explored Cueto?s free agent case, arguing that the 36-year-old was still a pretty decent option for teams looking for relatively inexpensive rotation depth.

Jeimer Candelario, Tigers settle at $5.8 million, avoiding arbitration.

Dustin Garneau, Tigers settle at $1.175 million for 2022, avoiding arbitration.

Today, another opportunity for readers to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful dialog and a variety of opinions are welcomed.

Let?s create some running conversational threads. And for those of you still going into offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom calls ? as you talk to your co-workers.

Here is today?s hot topic.

The Tigers finally have what is expected to be their starting rotation: Matt Manning, Casey Mize, Eduardo Rodriguez, Michael Pineda and Tarik Skubal. Tyler Alexander is expected to hold down a slot until Pineda has a chance to get ready.

The team signed Eduardo Rodriguez just before the CBA lockdown to a 5-year $77 mill contract. He will be 33 years old at the end of his contract.

Here is a link to his stats:

Analysts say that his numbers really are much better than indicated as one of MLB?s worst defenses (Boston) was behind him last year and inflated his stats.

Casey Mize will be 25 in a couple months and entering his third season (1 full year, 1 partial year) with the Tigers.

He has only been working with Chris Fetter for 1 year. Mize has also announced that he?s back to addressing his splitter this year.

Which 1 of these 2 pitchers needs to have a stand-out year the most?

If you?d like to leave a comment in addition to voting, what factors were the most important ones in your decision?

Don't be surprised when the Tigers trade Michael Fulmer later this year. It's his last year before free agency and he's already making close to the highest salary on the team for a reliever.

Right-hander Spencer Turnbull and the Tigers did not agree on a contract for the 2022 season. There will be an arbitration hearing.
I'm told the two sides are over $700,000 apart in negotiations.

Quincy Nieporte has signed with the Tigers, He was originally drafted by the Phillies in 2017 in the 26th round out of FSU. Put up a slash line of .343/.389/.606 with 17 home runs and 65 RBIs.
