Tigers 2021-2022 Free Agents Trades Rule 5 Arbitration Moves

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Toltally Tigers

The Detroit Tigers are in their first real year of shoring up their roster with competitive players. Their starting rotation is getting stronger and the infield has improved significantly.
Yet there is still much more work to do.

Bullpens are notoriously fickle. The performance of relievers can be unpredictable from one year to the next. Last year, the Tigers? bullpen ranked #22 in MLB.

The outfield is in the process of rebuilding. There is 1 veteran who is on the last year of his contract. Three others with some MLB experience and spotty results so far. And then there is the impressive prospect who just may make the team?s Opening Day roster.

Last year, the outfield was weak defensively with all players ranked below average defensively.

Comerica Park is user-friendly for pitchers, however, it poses a problem for those who man the outfield due to its size and gaps.

So which of these 2 areas needs the most attention?

Which area will help the team more?

Which area will offer the team the greatest improvement in performance?

Which area of the roster should be the priority for improvement?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

Most people in baseball look forward to the PECOTA Projections being released. Except for some of us, not this year.

It has historically been known as the most accurate prediction of how individual players and teams will perform for the coming year.

In case you are not familiar, PECOTA stands for Player Empirical Comparison and Optimization Test Algorith. It is a sabermetric system, meaning that it is a subset of analytics but involves more complicated stats and is a product of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR).

Very simply, sabermetrics is a system that evaluates past performance and predicts future performance to determine a player?s contributions to his team.

Before I go any further, you?ll be happy to know that at no time during this blog will math be required.

So what did they say about the Tigers for 2022?

Surprisingly, they have the team losing 10 more games this year and occupying last place in the AL Central. They?re forecasting 67.3 wins, 94.7 losses and a W/L % of .415.

Whaaat?

Yeah, I don?t believe it either.

PECOTA was wrong last year. The Tigers finished in 3rd place and won 10 more games than projected, finishing with 77 wins and 85 losses for a .475 W/L%.

And that was without all the new signings for the 2022 season.

In fact, I?m going to make my own predictions. Detroit is going to improve on last year?s record. I won?t say where in the standings they will finish because that is more of a factor about how the other teams will perform, but I believe they will end up above .500 and be competitive within MLB to some degree.
I think somewhere in the mid-80?s for wins is a safe bet.

Here are my 5 reasons to support my argument:

Nothing like writing a blog about Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene and then finding out within the hour that Tork made the Opening Day roster and Greene is going on the IL.

So rather than discussing them specifically, let?s discuss the overall situation that the Tigers may find themselves in again (hopefully) next year. And that is the question of whether or not to promote a prospect to the Opening Day roster. There are advantages as well as disadvantages.

If it should happen, and the prospect puts in enough service time, the Tigers will reap an extra draft pick as created by the new CBA.

However, there may also be advantages to keeping him in the minors. If the prospect stays in Toledo for only 15 days, the Tigers receive an extra year of service time. Instead of 6 years, they would get 7.

For the record, there are a number of promising prospects in the Tigers? farm system who are represented by Scott Boras. You know what that means.

So what would you do? Would you bring this player up if he was ready? Or would you happily trade a couple weeks of not seeing him in order to gain that extra year? A year in which he will most probably be in his prime performance years?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

Ready?

Should the Tigers put a top prospect on the Opening Day roster if he's ready?

1. Yes, if he's ready.

2. Hold him back 15 days to get the extra year of service.

Bless You Boys Tigers Blog Podcast 108: Talking trades with Brett Rutherford of DRaysBay. 28 minutes.
The Bless You Boys staff discusses baseball from a Tigers? perspective.

We thought it was a good time to enlist Ashley MacLennan?s numerous Tampa Bay Rays contacts for a little discussion about the Austin Meadows for Isaac Paredes deal. Along with Brandon Day, it was a good time to reach out to Rays? people for a little commentary on Meadows as a player, and their thoughts on the deal overall.

Thanks to Brett Rutherford of DRaysBay, the Tampa Bay Rays SB Nation site, for joining us for a chat about the surprising trade that went down Monday night.

We kept this one incredibly brief by our standards, due to a little technical difficulty. Just under a half hour, but it?s always good to talk to DRaysBay folk. Their team lives on the cutting edge, and they are consistently among the best baseball sites on the internet. So we discussed the trade, the Rays themselves, and their outlook in the tough AL East this season.

Thanks for listening!

The Brewers have traded Olympian Jamie Westbrook to the Tigers for cash. Westbrook, an infielder, was at Triple-A Nashville. Triple-A depth.

SATURDAY SURVEY.

The Detroit Tigers have been struggling all year and continue to rank as one of MLB?s worst teams. A surprise for many fans considering that the roster performed better than expected last year and played over .500 baseball for the second half of the season.

Granted, there is always the chance that things improve as they did last year. But frankly, the current signs are not encouraging. And it doesn?t help that Detroit ranks near the top in players on the IL.

So how did the team get to where it is today?

If you had to point your finger at 1 group as the single biggest factor in creating these results, who would you pick?
Which group is the biggest factor in the Tigers' poor performance this year?

1. Significant injuries.

2. A. J. Hinch and his coaches.

3. Al Avila's roster building plan.

I mean....the entire pitching staff except Skubal got injured. So with that in mind the last week plus is encouraging.

The hitting has been pretty atrocious though. Same story last year however. Hopefully with the warm weather the bags Heat up

I didn't see a Baez thread, so I figured I would post it here.

From an ESPN article.

Which big-time player needs to turn things around? The obvious answer here is Baez, who is halfway through the first season of the six-year, $140 million deal he signed with Detroit over the winter. Things have not gone well. Baez is hitting .213, middling power and leading the team in errors and outs on the basepaths. If Baez doesn't turn things back in the right direction over the second half, it'll make for a depressing winter in Detroit.
