Tigers 2022 Off Season for FA signings, trades, tender, nontender, Rule 5, to 2023

The Detroit Tigers will have 62 players at spring training. Almost 1/3rd of them (22) of them are non-roster invites. But it's how they are divided into categories that tells the story about where in the roster the most help is needed.

The breakdown is as follows: 9 LHP (4 new) and 22 RHP (11 new). A whopping 8 catchers (6 new) for 2 slots. 16 infielders (10 new) competing for 6 openings. Compare that to only 7 outfielders (2 new) for 4 slots.

Jeimer Candelario, Derek Hill, Erasmo Ramirez, Anthony Castro, Wily Peralta, Gerson Moreno...

The Nationals are stocked with ex-Tigers.

This also makes a statement about the level of talent the Tigers had. The Nats were MLB's worst team last year with 107 losses.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

Similar to what the rest of MLB teams are doing, the Detroit Tigers Scott Harris and A. J. Hinch said they will be working towards achieving defensive flexibility during the 2023 season. It offers many advantages including elevating the trade value of players, giving the team an ability to create the best lineups from day to day and adding depth when players have to go on the IL.

They emphasized that no one (other than Miguel Cabrera for obvious reasons) is a slam dunk to earn 1 single positional slot. Excluding the outfield, there are 5 ? 9 players who will be auditioning for each non-pitching position.

This begs the question of the best use of Jonathan Schoop. Defensively, he is one of the top players at 2nd base. But last year was his worst year offensively.

There are 9 other players who will try out at 2nd base this spring. And the Tigers have 2 other promising prospects waiting in the wings who could possibly see Detroit before the end of the year.

Keep in mind that Harris said there will be an emphasis on playing the young kids. Ensuring that they get enough reps to allow their talent to be accurately assessed as well as facilitating proper development.

So what will the team do with Schoop this year?

I?ve got 5 options.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

Now that the Detroit Tigers have a new man in charge, the team is spending this year re-evaluating its talent both at the major and minor league levels. Over the past couple years, the ranking of top prospects and the farm system have been falling.

Scott Harris has signed and invited several dozen new players to audition for every slot on the team. Excluding the outfield, there will be 5-9 players trying out for every infield position.

He has also stated that it?s important to give young players more time to play and get at-bats. It?s because there is a lot of talent that needs fresh eyes to re-assess it.

It would also mean that more experienced players will get less playing time.

But what is more important? Playing more experienced players for potentially a better record or taking this year to properly re-evaluate the younger players and see how they fit into the team?s future? Deciding which holes could be filled from inside that will also determine who to draft and which free agents to sign going forward?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts.
Of course, you can respond to as many other readers as you want.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

Should the Tigers priority for the year be wins or assessing/developing talent for next year?

1. Focus on getting the best record possible.

2. Focus on assessing/developing talent.

A glance at the website has the lead story about Cameron Maybin and Todd Jones joining the tv broadcast. The other top stories are Comerica's walls and non-roster invitees. Nothing even about Miggy.

No Tiger Fest, no special events. Even the Front Office didn't attend the annual economic dinner. Ticket prices are way down but if fans are smart (and need a baseball fix), they will wait until the season is underway. Expect that ticket prices will further drop significantly.

The Giants have since inked Roberto Perez, the Reds are set with the trio of Tyler Stephenson, Curt Casali and Luke Maile while the Twins signed Christian Vazquez to the position.

The Tigers are an interesting one though, as they?ve only added Triple-A backstop Donny Sands in a trade with the Phillies. They?re set to use some combination of Eric Haase, Jake Rogers and Sands in 2023 but it?s interesting to hear they were at least interested in a higher profile addition there this winter. If they do still look to add an external catcher, Gary Sanchez, Robinson Chirinos and Kevin Plawecki are the remaining notable catchers on the market.

A CHANGE IN STRATEGY.
Totally Tigers

There are only 2 people who have a more daunting task than Scott Harris? attempt to rebuild the Tigers.

The heads of ticket sales and marketing.

Their jobs will be the most challenging since the end of 2003 when the team lost 119 games.

What exactly do they have to sell?

Other than Riley Greene, there?s really nothing else.

There are no promising rookies coming up. The buzz surrounding Spencer Torkelson is all gone and replaced with skepticism.

Miguel Cabrera is a shadow of the man he used to be and he won?t even be playing that much. He broke records last year which held fan interest but there?s nothing other than his retirement this year.

Even Lou Whitaker?s jersey number retirement was last year.

What?s ironic is that the Tigers made a lot of significant changes since the end of last season. The problem is that none of them will sell tickets.

No one?s coming to Comerica to watch Scott Harris or Dr. Lund.

And they?re not going to be inspired by the changes to the ballpark dimensions either.

Or by seeing A. J. Hinch who is now already familiar to fans.

This is gonna be one tough sell.
