GIDDY UP!

I am writing this on October 25th but had to look twice at the calendar because it felt like December 25th. Christmas came early for us, Tiger fans! Or rather it feels like Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanzaa and Festivus all rolled into one.

The Tigers are finally making changes. Changes that should have been made 8 years ago in terms of personnel.

And then there are changes that should have been made decades ago as the Tigers ignored all the departments and resources that every other organization had added and improved ? advanced farm systems, analytics, technology, drafting, biometrics, conditioning and others.

It now appears that Detroit will be officially entering the 21st Century.

Tigers and BlueJays also could revive the talks they had around the trade deadline. Toronto is willing to trade a catcher in the right deal, and Detroit has the swing-and-miss relievers coveted by the Jays (and other contenders).

Translation: Al Avila couldn't make a trade to save his life. Word got around that his demands were unrealistic. Scott Harris will revisit the old deal and make something happen.

I thought those swing and miss type are what Harris says he wants? The Blue Jays catcher I want Alejandro Kirk.

Salt in the Wound: The Astros FLEECED Detroit in the Justin Verlander Trade.

"In exchange for two Cy Young awards, 102 starts, 61 wins, 825 strikeouts, a 0.833 WHIP and a 2.26 ERA, the Tigers received 146 games at the big league level, most played at a far below average level."

Thanks to The Incompetent Fuck Stick Jack-off aka Al Avila.

and much saved the franchise $115M. Those teams weren't going to win any divisions, let alone any playoff games, with or without JV

I don't give a fuck about the money, they let the greatest Tigers pitcher leave in a trade for nothing.

this is true. However, it is the GM's job not only to attempt to put a competitive team on the field but to do what the owner wants. At that point in the state of the franchise the owner didn't want to spend a bunch of money for a pitcher on a team that was going to have to re-build.

In hindsight, they should have tried to trade Miggy instead...or both

not a chance in hell

If Verlander gets his wish to pitch until he is 45, I am assuming he is close to his coveted 300 Wins and maybe they sign him for his last year to accomplish this rare pitching feat as a Tigers Pitcher. The team would have to be competitive for this pipe dream to happen.

Right, definitely not before.

It?s interesting to read some of the social media comments about the Tigers? recent moves involving waiver wire claims, revamping the 40-man roster and the non-tender deadline.

It?s funny that after so many years complaining about a number of players, some fans are now upset that they?ve been dropped from the roster.

Actually, I think it has more to do with Stockholm Syndrome than actually believing these players had something important to offer.

Part of it also has to do with how many years some of these players stayed in Detroit. And how they were hyped by Al Avila and the major local media.

The result? A number of fans were tricked into believing that these were actually legitimate players. Seeing them year after year made them think it was true.

In actuality, Avila oversold the talent on this team. Mostly because he had to preserve his own job by telling us how great these players were.

Failure to do so would certainly have given credence that this rebuild was false and failing.

And for the same reasons, it?s why he hastily rushed up Spencer Torkelson before he was ready.

It no longer became about the rebuild. It turned into a strategy for job preservation.

But even more interesting is the belief by some fans that the Tigers won?t be able to find better players to replace them.

This ain?t Al Avila?s team anymore, folks. The grown-ups are now in charge....

How many of you return a day or two later to check the final results of our weekly polls?

We really have an excellent cross-section of fans and historically, this group of readers almost always tend to be spot on about what they see happening with the Tigers. In part, those who come to this site are educated about the team much more so than the average fan. I am hoping that those with offices at Comerica read what is being said and use it to gauge the pulse of the fans, not to mention incorporating this factor into their decision-making.

As background, each poll is carefully constructed, offering the full spectrum of options as well as avoiding the possibility of leading readers to a specific answer. And they are also tamper-proof. Unlike the All-Star voting, it?s 1 reader, 1 vote. The blog platform kicks out any additional votes submitted by a reader who has already voted once.

Let?s now take the time to review all of the major polls completed since Scott Harris was hired. How often were you in the majority?

Here are a list of over 20 of the questions, followed by the winning percentage. In a few cases, the runners up are also listed.

MESSY MEDIA MESSAGES.
Totally Tigers

We?ve always known that there is a huge difference between the sports writers of the major local daily papers in Detroit and everyone else. So much so that if you really wanted to know the truth about what was happening with the Tigers, you had to seek out the articles of independent or national journalists.

The assumption has always been that the local press needed to preserve their ability to access the clubhouse so they essentially wrote puff pieces that wouldn?t melt butter in any Tiger official?s mouth. We?ve also read the stories about how the Tigers have influenced the editors at both papers about who covers their team.

Never mind that sports writers in other major cities have free rein with their topics and criticisms. Most don?t pull punches. For example, I live in a region where the MLB team?s stars, manager and owner have regularly been put under the microscope and chastised. Even when they were in the running to be the World Series champs.

But those specific Detroit writers are notorious for controlling what is revealed and preventing criticism from falling on team officials. It?s not lost on most of us that if the media had held fire to the feet of certain people like Al Avila, we wouldn?t have had to suffer for 8 long years.

Don?t just put the blame for why this team has been so bad for so long solely on ownership and the Front Office. The likely media suspects deserve a whole heapin? helping of guilt. Co-conspirators. Accomplices.

Much more to this story.....
