Tigers 2021-2022 Free Agents Trades Rule 5 Arbitration Moves

THE SATURDAY SURVEY.

Earlier this week, the Detroit Tigers made it official. Signing a shortstop for next year is a priority.

They currently do not have anyone in the pipeline who will be ready within the next couple of years which means that they need a player who can fill the position for multiple years.

The question is just how many years are they willing to go?

Al Avila referenced the Tigers? history of lengthy, expensive signings:

?Sometimes a big splash turns out wrong for you.?

??we?re going to make sure whatever decisions we make free-agency wise, that it doesn?t sink this organization for years to come, but it builds this organization for years to come.?

The Tigers still have Miguel Cabrera?s contract on the books for another 2 years at $64 million.

Given all of this, there will be a number of solid shortstops entering free agency in several weeks. A few of them come with a high profile, like Carlos Correa. Most of the top 5 are expected to want substantial contracts.

Correa has already turned down a contract for 6 years/ $125 million and it is believed that he wants one similar to Francisco Lindor?s at 10 years/$340 million.

Al Avila has also stated that the Tigers also need at least 2 more starting pitchers and a catcher. Given all of this, what kind of a contract should the Tigers offer a free agent shortstop?

What kind of a contract should the Tigers offer a free agent shortstop?

1. 4 or fewer yrs./ $100 mill or less

2. 5-6 yrs. / $100 - $200 mill

3. 7+ yrs./ $200 - $300+ mill

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.

It?s the off-season for the Tigers, and for the first time since Al Avila took over as GM, the team is expected to participate in the free agent market in more than a superficial way.

Today?s blog addresses that subject and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog, you?ve got 10 sentences max to share your thoughts.
Of course, you can respond to as many other readers as you want.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.

Ready?

During last week?s press conference, Al Avila stated that the Tigers are looking to add players to three areas: starting pitching, catching and shortstop.

The Tigers ran through 13 different starting pitchers in 2021 and will need to add (what is expected to be) 2 new starters to the rotation. They are in need of veteran help.

With the loss of Jake Rogers, the team also needs and experienced catcher who can successfully guide the young members of the rotation.

And we all know about the glaring hole at the shortstop position.

Here?s your challenge..

Out of the 3 options below, if you could select only one, which area should be made the priority in the payroll budget? Where should the Tigers be spending the most money?

For what positional need should the Tigers spend the most money?

1. Catcher

2. Shortstop

3. Starting Pitching

The Ilitch Org?s 2018 exploration of one day starting their own RSN appears to have fizzled. Bally Sports Detroit has signed on to multi-year extensions to continue broadcasting Red Wings and Tigers, I?m hearing. Both of the expiring contracts were believed to be up in 2021.

Today, another chance for readers to have increased opportunities to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful conversations and a variety of opinions are welcomed.

Let?s create some running conversation threads with not just comments but replies to others. And for those of you still going into offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom calls ? as you talk to your co-workers.

Here is today?s hot topic. For this blog only, a maximum of 10 sentences please.

Justin Verlander hopes to return to the mound next April after not pitching for 21 months (just short of 2 years) due to injury and Tommy John surgery. Houston?s owner said he expects that the Astros will make him a qualifying offer of $18.4 mill. However, it may be part of a strategy to regain a draft pick lost from the cheating scandal.

If JV accepts the QO, it would be for just 1 year. But at age 39, Verlander would prefer a multi-year deal and is rumored to want to test the market.
The Astros have also stated that they expect JV to want a ?contract of some length.?

If Justin turns down the QO offer, then any other team signing him would forfeit a draft pick.

Unless he holds his own personal pitching exhibition pre-season, JV would sign with a team not having his arm tested post-surgery. And historically, it is 1.5 years after the operation before a pitcher is said to be fully recovered and pitching to their former established standards. Even though he technically could have come back this past September, his doctor did not clear him to pitch.

JV has stated that he would love to return to Detroit. But would the Tigers want him back? Would he work well as the veteran presence the team needs?
Does Verlander fit into Detroit?s rebuild plans? Is the money he would want spent better elsewhere within the roster? Does the fans? love for their former franchise face merit his return?

You decide. Would you want Justin Verlander to return to Detroit?

Do you want Justin Verlander to return to Detroit?

1. Yes, bring him back.

2. No, he's not the right fit.
