Tigers 2021-2022 Free Agents Trades Rule 5 Arbitration Moves

The Ilitch Org?s 2018 exploration of one day starting their own RSN appears to have fizzled. Bally Sports Detroit has signed on to multi-year extensions to continue broadcasting Red Wings and Tigers, I?m hearing. Both of the expiring contracts were believed to be up in 2021.

PATTERNS DON?T LIE.

I?m hearing the rumors about the Oakland A?s Billy Beane possibly becoming a new GM with another team. I?m also wondering whether hiring him will finally solve the decades-old dysfunction of NY?s second baseball team. The Mess, er, the Mets.

Don?t you ever wonder about teams that exhibit the same old patterns year after year? The same teams doing well, others wandering in the dark, the frequently scandal-ridden and those constantly mired in the mud? Or the ones that simply have a pulse and not much else?

Why is it that some organizations just keep their heads down and do their jobs the right way like the Cards? Or others, like the Angels, have players die and employees committing illegal acts? Yet others that allow a pervasive culture of sexual harassment to thrive?

Why are there patterns?

It all boils down to the corporate culture. It?s about leadership ? or the lack of it.

It?s about those who truly want to be the best and pay attention to the details. For others, the focus is on profits.

It?s about some teams being proactive ? and others being reactive.

The owners also serve as a huge influence. Look at those like George Steinbrenner. Look at the meddlesome owners who force their GMs to make unwise moves. Even consider how teams change dramatically, like the Baltimore Orioles, when they get new owners.

There are lots of factors at play. And when you have teams that consistently win year after year, teams should take note. More importantly, when organizations struggle year after year, they need to look inward. It?s the organization holding them back.

If you?re a baseball fan, you know what I?m talking about. Even when there is great fanfare attached to a certain team, you tell yourself that you?ll believe it when you see it. Expectations, for certain organizations, are ingrained.

So how would we break down all 30 MLB teams?

I?ve taken each of the organizations and assigned them to 7 different categories that describe the perception of their overall corporate culture. It helps to explain their performance, esp. when they often spend lots of money and get little to show for it.

It?s not all about the talent on the field. What it is about is how well the organization runs overall and the expectations that are set from above.

What I?ve used in my analysis is recent history going back approximately 10 years. Sometimes more. I?ve gone through their win-loss records for each year. And I don?t just analyze the past year. It?s about more than that. We?re looking at patterns.

I also look at what is going on behind the scenes. Where are the problems? Why are they in the news?

I?ve taken into account teams that were purposely rebuilding and having some bad years, but have bounced back nicely when the rebuild was complete.

I have also defined each of the categories to give you an idea of the pattern seen for each of the teams sitting together. Each category is ranked from best to worst.

Alex Cora is essentially AJ Hinch..the Tigers biggest issue..is that..Chaim Bloom is BOS GM..DET is running a FO with Jay Sarotori and AJ Hinch..we now know thats an upgrade of monstrous proportions..we just don't know how much yet..I promise its not Chaim Bloom upgrade yet..

no way DET pays:
Matthew Boyd 7.3M
Joe Jimenez 1.8M
Dustin Garneau 1.6M

Yankees make sweeping changes to coaching staff, part ways with Phil Nevin, Marcus Thames and P.J. Pilittere.

This is the difference between teams that win consistently and those who go 37 years without a World Series title.

From their heyday years of 2006 through 2016 (11 yrs), the Detroit Tigers finished first in the AL Central only 4 times. Since going to the WS in 2006, it would take them another 5 years to get back to the playoffs.

In those 11 years, they went to the playoffs only 5 times. They won only 1 WS game out of 9 w/5 Cy Young winners, multiple MVPs, RoY, Triple Crown and 3 Hall of Famers. And yet, no changes were made in managing or coaching other than hiring a manager w/zero experience.

For the first time ever, the Detroit Tigers are sending small groups of players to specialized instruction camps before next year. They are finally doing what the best front offices in baseball are practicing.

Each camp will offer specific skill development like pitch development. This may be similar to what teams like the Cubs and Dodgers offer where they have specialists who address 'strong minds", "run prevention", etc.

Generally, there are 5 areas that these top teams address with their players: athletic training/medicine, mental skills/psychology, nutrition, sports science and strength and conditioning.

SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

This past week, the Detroit Tigers signed a new multi-year contract with Bally Sports Detroit to broadcast their games. While the Tigers have lost viewers every year since 2015, they remain the 14th biggest MLB market.

The Tigers have ranked dead last in MLB tv broadcasters by numerous publications every year over the past 4 years. This year?s reviews are not out yet but in 2020, the Tigers ranked last in analysis 4.3 (out of 10.0), 3.2 in charisma and 4.0 in coherence. It wasn?t even a close contest between them and the #29 ranked team.

Reports have BSD being happy with the Tigers? staffers/reporters and not anticipating changes at this time. Unknown is whether this feeling also applies to the main broadcast team. The choice of broadcasters is a joint effort between BSD and the Detroit Tigers.

It comes down to you, dear fans. This should be all about what you want and need.

How do you feel about the quality of product when you turn on the tv? This is your chance to potentially inspire change or maintain the status quo on what BSD may do. We?ll be forwarding this poll to them so cast your vote, tell your friends to vote here and leave your (respectful) comments of 3-4 sentences if you so choose.

How do you feel about the quality of product put out by the Detroit Tigers in-game tv broadcast team?

1. It's solid.

2. Mostly good.

3. Mostly bad.

4. Unwatchable.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

In a short couple of weeks, the Tigers will officially head into the Hot Stove season looking to improve their roster. While they performed much better than expected in 2021, they still finished below .500. Given their improvement, everyone will expect the team to generate more wins and finish the year above .500.

The roster is still very much a work in progress with lots of holes.

The vast majority of the players are defensively below-average, costing the teams runs. They have been without a viable SS all year and are missing a full-time first baseman. Their top defensive catcher won?t be playing next year.

The starting rotation currently has 3 young/rookie pitchers. There are no veteran hurlers and the team went through 13 different starting pitchers last year.

Offense has been a hit-and-miss proposition. The team ranks #16 in runs with a .242 batting average, also ranked #16. Their OPS ranks #22 at .707.

While the Tigers took series from many of the top teams, they failed to beat their own competition within the AL Central.

Today?s blog addresses these 3 areas and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads.
The more the merrier!

For this one blog, you?ve got 10 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can respond to as many other readers as you want.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.

As illustrated above, the Tigers have concerns with defense, offense and starting pitching. Out of the 3 options below, if you could select only one, which of the three areas do you believe will help generate more wins than the others in 2022?

Which area, if improved, will help generate more wins than the others in 2022?

1. Defense

2. Offense

3. Starting pitching

Cuban Euclides Rojas, former pitching coach with Marlins, Red Sox, and Pirates, has been named the new Director of Latin America Player Development for the Detroit Tigers, Rojas confirmed. He worked as a pitching coach for the Acereros of Monclova in the Mexican Baseball in 2021.

In case you're keeping track, in just the past year, the Detroit Tigers have hired 5 new employees w/Dodger ties: Chris Fetter, George Lombard, Ryan Garko, Gabe Ribas and Ryan Sienko. Is there a chance that Stan Kasten and/or Andrew Friedman would want to come to Detroit?
